Description
With the publication of his 1908 work, "Modernism and Romance," the influential British editor and literary critic R.A. Scott-James became one of the first to use a new term for a movement then sweeping the artistic and literary worlds: modernism. In the first decades of the 20th century, artists and literary figures ranging from Pablo Picasso to Ezra Pound rejected the realism of the 19th century while radically pushing the boundaries of art and literature. In "Modernism and Romance," Scott-James explores modern currents in literature, noting, "there are characteristics of modern life in general which can only be summed up, as Mr. Thomas Hardy and others have summed them up, by the word, modernism." Though Hardy is primarily remembered as a Victorian novelist, echoes of the nascent modernist movement can be seen in his later novels and poetry, and Scott-James insightfully examines how the pessimism of Hardy's work reflects the cruel nature of modern society.
